mmm… cakes.

Bloke on The Avenue is one of these geezers who doesn’t believe in healthy treats. Try as I might to put as much fruit, fibre and unprocessed sweetners into baked goodies, he reckons if you’re going to have a treat, go hard core industrial grade.

But listen up. I met a lovely woman, Meghan, the mother of Little One’s new Prep friend. She emailed me a recipe — if you can call such a simple thing a recipe — for chocolate brownies. Only, these don’t contain sugar, oil, butter, chocolate or any added fat or unhealthy substance. Behold:

1 cup of walnuts
1 cup pitted dates
cocoa to taste

You process the walnuts and dates into a paste, mix in the cocoa, press it into a pan, refrigerate it, cut into squares when set. That’s it.

Bloke thought they were divine. I thought they were divine. Little One preferred a frozen banana. But these are NOT the Can’t-Believe-It’s-Not-Butter™ stripe of treat substitute. Oh no. They taste JUST LIKE chocolate brownies. Only yummier and even more wicked and creamy and sweet. Mmmmm. And their nutrients haven’t been compromised with cooking.

[PS: For your buttery and sugary cooked treat needs, the best bakery in Moreland is Sugardough on Lygon St. Unbeatable, at least around here. On par with Loafer in Nth Fitzroy and Baker D.Chirico in St Kilda. And they use free-range eggs & organic flour.]
